Ecommerce SEO: The Product Page Checklist That Fixes Most Stores
Key Takeaways
- Most store SEO wins come from product and category pages, not the blog.
- Duplicate manufacturer copy and messy variant URLs are the most common problems we find.
- Product, price and availability markup must match what shoppers see on the page.
- Link categories to best sellers and best sellers back to their categories.
When a store's organic traffic stalls, the cause is rarely a lack of blog posts. It is usually the product and category pages. This is the checklist I run first.
1. Titles and headings
- Put the product name and the main attribute shoppers search for in the title.
- Use one clear H1 that matches the product name.
- Avoid stuffing brand and keywords into every title.
2. Descriptions that are yours
Manufacturer copy is used by every other retailer. Write a short original description covering who it is for, what is in the box, sizing or compatibility, and care or usage. Add the questions customers actually ask.
3. Variants and URLs
- Pick one canonical URL per product.
- Do not let filters and sort orders create thousands of crawlable URLs.
- Keep size and colour as selectors, not separate indexed pages, unless they have their own demand.
4. Structured data
Add Product markup with price, currency, availability and (only if visible on the page) rating. Keep it identical to the visible price. Mismatches cause rejections.
5. Images and speed
- Compress images and set width and height to prevent layout shift.
- Lazy-load below-the-fold images.
- Check mobile speed first, since most Indian shoppers browse on phones.
6. Internal links
Link each category to its best sellers, and each product back to its category and to a few related products. Our technical SEO guide explains how crawl paths work.
7. Trust and answers
Shipping, returns, size guides and warranty details near the buy button reduce doubt, and give answer engines clear facts to quote. See how that overlaps with AI search visibility.
| Page type | Biggest quick win |
|---|---|
| Product | Original description and Product markup |
| Category | Short intro, links to best sellers |
| Filtered view | Block thin combinations from indexing |
| Out of stock | Clear availability or redirect |

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every product variant have its own URL?
Usually no. Use one canonical product page with variant selectors unless a variant has real separate search demand, such as a distinct model or size people search for by name.
Do product reviews help SEO?
Real reviews add fresh, unique content and help conversion. Only mark them up if they are visible on the page and genuine.
How do I handle out-of-stock products?
Keep the page live if the product may return and show availability clearly. If it is gone for good, redirect to the closest replacement or category.
